About the artist

Elin Borthen was born in 1952 and raised in Bærum, a community just on the outskirts of Oslo, Norway and she is currently living in Haslum just outside of Bekkestua. Her artistic activities are many and varied. She has worked successfully with gilt leather which is a very old handicraft from the 16th century, and among other things she has crafted a large number of high backed chairs. She has worked intensively with rather untraditional porcelain painting, and has held courses for elementary and junior high school students.

In the autumn of 1987, in cooperation with a clothes designer at the yearly fashion show in Oslo, she exhibited a collection of her hand made leather belts inlaid with porcelain plates engraved with gold. In the summer of 2000 she was hired by Ullmann A/S to artistically create the Ullmann chair for marketing purposes.

Her artistic education has been acquired of years through many diverse courses in drawing, painting and sculpturing, as well as working with several well known Norwegian artists, among those Peter Esdaile. She has herself had twelve separate exhibitions and has also contributed to a number of collective exhibitions.

Elin Borthens exhibitions is composed of many diverse paintings using a blending technique of acrylics and oil. She favors a half-abstract expressive art form which expresses her individual philosophy.

The artist herself attempts in her paintings to explore the artistic possibilities that exist in order to capture the inner landscape of her personal dreams and visions. She is fascinated by the human emotional state and tries to paint it as simple and naturally as possible. She works intensely with color so that it will reflect the exact character she needs so that she can communicate her inner impressions and convictions as strongly as she feels them.

Art is something that cannot be measured. The most important thing for her is to express herself artistically in such a manner that she reaches her intended public.
